German culture helped to shape Fredericksburg. If you do anything in Fredericksburg, come hungry! Steaks, sausages and countless breads fill the air. Hungry tummies will fill quickly, but be sure not to top off! Indulge on chocolates, strudels, schnitzels and countless other treats for all ages.
In 2018, Fredericksburg was voted one of the top 10 “Best Small Town for Shopping”. In addition, adults will find the Texas Hill Country produces some of the finest wines in the world. For instance, Wine Road 290 offers 19 wineries within a few miles of each other. Many claim the Texas Hill Country’s wineries, climate, soil and sun rival central Italy and the Rhone Valley in France.

New Braunfels’ (New Brawn-fulls) translates as the ‘New Brown Rock’ in the Texas Hill Country, but was most likely named for Braunfels in Germany. Here, you will find a strong German influence and cultural hints. New Braunfels offers more food, wine and beer options than you can imagine. Delectable Bavarian food is on full display for all food lovers. The historic Faust Hotel and Brewery offers an amazing menu of great pub food and beer brewed right on-site. With that in mind, you will enjoy a variety of activities for individuals, couples, and families. For example, ranked as one of the top water parks in America by US News and World Report, Schlitterbahn offers sixty-five acres of exciting and innovative rides for adults and children alike.
If you want a slower, more relaxing experience, consider tubing down the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers. Each offers a different experience. The Guadalupe’s water flow is controlled by Canyon Dam, so the temperature and current can change. You should plan to spend around three hours tubing this section of the Guadalupe River. An underground spring feeds the Comal River, so the water stays around seventy degrees and provides a calm, shorter trip than the Guadalupe float.

Did you know the Texas Hill Country has six communities certified as Dark Sky communities? As a result, astronomers of all skill levels enjoy the night sky without the light pollution found in most parts of the world. In 2014, Dripping Springs earned the first International Dark-Sky Community in Texas. In addition, the Wimberley Valley Cities earned the third Dark-Sky Community in Texas.
